Attaching Locs with Thread: Why We Don’t Recommend It
If you’ve been on social media lately, you’ve probably seen people attaching or repairing their locs using black thread. It’s usually done to reattach a fallen loc, join thin ones, or connect extensions.
But at HairloomNG, we don’t recommend this method and here’s why.
Why People Use Thread in the First Place
Thread is often used because it’s:
- Cheap and easy to find
- Invisible in black hair
- Quick for DIY fixes
But thread wasn’t made for hair, and it causes more harm than good for your locs.
Why We Advise Against It
Thread might look harmless, but it can cause serious damage over time:
- Breakage: When tied too tightly, thread can literally cut into your hair shaft.
- Thinning: Constant tension weakens the roots or joins of the loc.
- Pain or inflammation: Many clients report headaches or tightness after.
- Trapping dirt and buildup: Thread isn’t breathable and doesn’t “lock” with the hair, it just wraps around it.
- Hard to remove: Removing old thread can snag and pull your natural hair or cause permanent damage.
We’ve seen too many clients needing emergency repairs because of this.
What We Recommend Instead
There are healthier, more professional ways to repair or extend locs:
- Crochet reattachment
- Kinky hair wrapping (with textured hair, not thread)
- Interlocking techniques for thinning areas
- Custom permanent loc extensions blended into your own hair
These methods are gentler, safer, and allow your hair to breathe, grow, and lock properly.
Our Advice
Your locs are not just a style, they’re a commitment. Using thread may seem like a quick fix, but it can cost you your hair’s long-term health.
At HairloomNG, we focus on scalp-safe, strand-safe, long-term solutions. We believe in preserving the strength and beauty of your natural hair with methods that support growth, not damage it.
